The best bulletin board ever

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

No matter what happened today, my day was complete. I have such the ear-to-ear grin that I was able to snap a picture of the aforementioned bulletin board in Mr. Analogy’s room.

History is centered around Jesus bulletin board

You really need to click on the picture to see what is written under the words “THE ONE.” Oh this is too good.

I think it goes without saying that this might cross the line about keeping religion out of the classroom. I wonder what type of lens “history” has been told through this entire year.

The real world economics of opportunity costs

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

I feel safe in generalizing that most people have the pleasure of suffering through being exposed to economics through a required introductory class in college. For most, this is a first chance at the four-hundred person lecture hall. For me, it was a 25-person torture* session with the man who was leading the data-driven exposé of Harvard’s grade inflation. (That means there was no inflation in our class. There was likely deflation.)

Until this past Friday, the only “everyday” economics concept I ever casually incorporated into my life was the idea of marginal utility. I think I just enjoy being weird and walking around thinking that my utility keeps decreasing as I eat each of the last seven spoonfuls of salad from Qdoba even though I know I will feel ill later.

I added another of the guns-and-butter** crew to my arsenal of daily musings when, only as my weird mind does, I declared in my head that I was suffering from opportunity costs. (more…)

Awards Day = Second only to having a valentine on Feb 14

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I’ve regretted all year having fallen short on creating the “Science Star of the Week” board. I just never did it, and then it would slip my mind for a long time, and then I would think about it and not do it because I’d feel it was “too late.” At least now I’m resolved to have the regular awards for my students.

Today was the end-of-year awards ceremony. I have the feeling that this type of day is more than just routine in most SLPS buildings. I believe it is ritual. (more…)

An update on my school closing

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

This past week I filed more paperwork to try and secure a position at my old school from the beginning of this year. I’ve become settled on the idea of returning to middle school. The “consequence” of having a failing grade is much less. I can be part of a great team of teacher who, all together, will prepare our students to be successful in high school. I will be part of a healthy professional community with more than four teacher who are on-board with the administration.

In the end, though, I’m preparing for a surprise placement. We had to put down five choices for next year. By indicating five choices I was indicating nearly every vacancy on the list for which I am qualified. It will be interesting to see how things shake out.

On a good note to all of this, I have received permission from someone in the position to give me permission that I can take everything out of my school this year and move it with me. I’m moving it currently to the middle school. It’s going to be a pain if I have to move out from that school again!
